Graffiti and its highly unusual meaning

To most foreign eyes and surely many local ones, the sight of hand-painted graffiti is unwelcome. Yet, in Cuba, where Communist law bans all public displays of signs without prior government authorization and approval, the sudden appearance of brightly colored, spray-painted graffiti like these held a certain special meaning. Young people, the presumed “artists”, were acting fearlessly, no longer interested in following a law that criminalizes independent self-expression. While there may not be anything obviously political in the message, I found myself, like many Cubans my age or older, astounded that what was associated locally with scenes from American movies could suddenly appear under Raúl Castro’s watch.
