Guardian of the Cuban Painted Snail

The extraordinary, brightly colored Cuban Painted Snail is considered the rarest snail in the world. Native only to Cuba and dependent on a particular diet and tranquil environment, the snail has a friend in this man who lives, together with his family, directly across from the outlook where I photographed the site where Columbus landed. His front yard features a tree covered with these beautiful creatures. They survive in large part, thanks to his care. Baracoa, July 2016.
