Forgotten Origins of Wifredo Lam

Few admirers of the world-famous surreal, modern art of Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) have visited his impoverished childhood home, just a block from the central plaza of Sagua la Grande, a once prosperous provincial city. When I made the journey in March 2002, I never expected to find the façade of his home and its ancient French-style, tiled roof very much as it was when Lam lived there a century ago. The same was also true of the homes that lined his street. Sagua la Grande, March 2002.
